Soy Protein Isolate

Athletes consume whey to cover their daily protein needs. Whey is an animal product, and can be easily absorbed and transformed by the body. Since we wanted to balance our NEOH with animal protein sources, we had to find an alternative. And we found it quickly. Soy protein isolate is not only impressive due to its protein content of 90%, but also because of its high number of essential amino acids.  

No ADI has been established for soy protein isolate, since the FDA has granted GRAS status to the substance. The substance is thus considered harmless to humans, regardless of the quantities in which it is consumed. 

Soy protein isolate is the plant-based and vegan variant of a whey. Due to the excellent quality of the product and the fact that it contains all amino acids essential for the body, soy protein isolate is particularly suitable for athletes. A BW of 85 and a PDCAAS of 0.92 underline the top values of the product.  The soybean has been cultivated since at least 3050 BC.

The soybean, which belongs to the legume family, had its beginnings as a useful plant in Japan. Since 1550 B.C., soya has also been planted in Korea and China. In the meantime, the soybean has become one of the world's most frequently cultivated foods. By 2016, more than 335 million tons had already been harvested and processed worldwide. Soybean flowers usually bloom between 2 to 5 weeks, and because the plant is hermaphroditic, it can also pollinate itself. 

"The biological value (BW) of a substance is a quality standard for the nutritional-physiological quality of a protein, or it is regarded as a definition for the efficiency of the transformation of a dietary protein into a body's own protein by the human body. The chicken egg, to which a BW of 100 has been allocated, is considered the reference value. Soy has a BW of 85 and thus plays in the top league of the most usable dietary proteins. By way of comparison: Wheat has a BW of only 57.  The PDCAAS was chosen by the FAD in 1993 as a method to make statements about the quality of a product. The digestibility of a protein, i.e. how many essential amino acids of a protein can be utilized, is measured in the human organism. 1.00 was set as the highest value. This value means that 100% of the amino acids essential for the human body have been delivered after digestion. Soy protein isolate has a value of 0.92 (soy protein 1.00). In comparison, wheat only has a PDCAAS of 0.40."

Today, soy is mainly used as food and feed. But soybeans are also used in many areas of medicine. Since it is rich in phytoestrogens, it is used, among other things, in the treatment of breast cancer and chronic intestinal diseases. Soybeans are also used in industry. On the one hand, it is used in America as biodiesel and, on the other hand, it is also the main component in many wall paints and lacquers. Many different substances can be obtained from the bean, such as soya oil, soya lecithin, soya protein concentrate and soya protein isolate.

Soybean oil is the most widely used vegetable oil in the world and is used above all in many margarine products. Soy lecithin is a source of essential amino acids. Soy protein concentrate is taken as a dietary supplement because it has a protein content of 70%. Soy protein isolate, which has a protein content of 90%, is becoming more and more popular as a vegan alternative to conventional animal protein powders because it has the same value as animal whey. Soy protein isolate is the only plant-based protein powder that contains all essential amino acids. 

Soy protein isolate is obtained after the soy beans have been processed into a flour.
